Rights to use and control land are central to rural women’s livelihoods. However, despite the importance of land to women, their land rights are often violated (UNECA, 2003). Women face forced evictions by their in-laws, especially after the death of their spouses or during divorce or separation. Conflicts, displacement, destruction of homes, family structures, and communities often leave women more vulnerable. Lack of documentation combined with legal or customary discrimination often blocks women from accessing their land rights.
